Radstock is a town in north east Somerset. It lies to the north of the Mendip Hills and eight miles south west of the historic city of Bath. It was twinned with the town Midsomer Norton in 1933 and formed the small conurbation of Norton Radstock. The wellow brook and Fosseway Roman road both run through the town of Radstock, whilst the River Somer runs through Midsomer Norton. Coal was discovered at Radstock in 1763 and mining began as part of the Somerset Coalfield. The town grew in importance and was the terminus for the Somerset Coal Canal, later turned into a tramway. A rail link was built from Radstock to Frome for coal transport, which was later converted to standard gauge and connected to the Bristol and Somerset line, which connected to the Great Western Railway. Passenger traffic was carried up until 1959. Since the mines closed in the 1970's Norton Radstock has become an area for commuters who work in Bath and Bristol. The Radstock Museum is housed in the former Market Hall of the town and offers an insight into life in Somerset since the 19th century. Also worth a visit is the charming stone church dedicated to St Nicholas.
