Situated on the western edge of the beautiful Mendip Hills in Somerset, the pretty, unspoilt village of Shipham is close to the A38 and some 15 miles south of Bristol. Shipham Hill is one of the highest points in the Mendip Hills. It offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, the Bristol Channel and Weston-super-Mare. In 'Secret Places of the Heart', H G Wells described these views "They first saw the great river like a sea with the Welsh mountains hanging in the sky behind as they came over the Mendip crest above Shipham". St Leonard's church at Shipham dates back to the 19th century and has a stained glass window dedicated to Hannah More. In the Domesday Book of 1086 the village is listed as Sipeham, meaning 'sheep home'. In the 18th and 19th century the rich zinc and lead deposits in the area were mined. Explorers and cavers still visit the Singing River Mine at Shipham. Another attraction in the area is the Mendip Raceway, which is famous for its Stock Car Racing. Visitors should consider a stay at the Penscott Inn, a traditional coaching inn dating from 1450, with 12 en suite rooms and an oak beamed restaurant.
