Situated high on Exmoor in Somerset, Simonsbath is a small village and yet the largest parish in Somerset. The tiny village lies on the junction of the east to west road from Exford to Challacombe and the north to south road from Lynton to South Molton. From a valley to the north of Simonsbath rises the River Exe, whilst the River Barle runs through the village itself. This Barle is crossed by a triple arched medieval bridge. The bridge required extensive repair after floods in 1952. The village is also a along the Two Moors Way footpath. Exmoor as we know it today really began with Simonsbath. John Knight acquired the Kings Allotment, a farm made in part of the Royal Forest, in 1818. He wanted to turn the forest into farmland and was responsible for much land drainage and enclosure of moor land. He built roads connecting Simonsbath to other nearby towns and villages and was responsible for the seven acre lake, Pinkworthy Pond. In the end nature beat him and the dream was never fully realised. Visitors can stay in comfort at Simonsbath House, which stood alone for 150 years before the hamlet of Simonsbath grew up nearby and is now converted to a hotel.
