Awarded 'Somerset Village of the Year' in 2005, South Petherton is actually a small country town situated along the A303 between Ilminster and Martock, about 25 miles South East of Taunton. The River Parrett is close by, which is no doubt what attracted the first settlers about one thousand years ago. The land was also safe from tidal flooding, unlike much of the Somerset Levels at the time. With steep slopes and good views of the surrounding lands it was a good defensive point and it is claimed in The Saxon Chronicle of 680AD that 'Pedridia' was the site of a major battle in which King Kenwalk finally defeated the British. Historians, however, are unsure of the accuracy of this story. The town is largely constructed of the local Hamstone, giving it a distinct look. Buildings in the village span over six centuries, with the Manor House dating back to the 14th century. The church of St Peter and St Paul has what is believed to be the largest octagonal church tower in England. Pubs in the town include The Brewers Arms and The Wheatsheaf Inn. You can enjoy a meal at one of several restaurants, including Marbi's and The Old Bakehouse Restaurant.
