Templecombe is located on the A357 road five miles south of Wincanton and twelve miles east of Yeovil in the county of Somerset. The village has a population of about 1,500. The history of Templecombe is an ancient one. Abbas and Templecombe were formerly two separate estates and villages. Abbascombe was held by Shaftesbury Abbey since Saxon times. Earl Leofwine, brother of King Harold owned the other manor, but after 1066 was given Bishop Odo of Bayeux. In 1185 it was granted to the Knight's Templar and made into a regional centre for their Order, admitting new members and training them for the Crusades. Originally known as Combe ('valley'), the village became Templecombe during this period. Later on the village became an important intersection between the London and South Western Railway and the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway. In 1966, however, the station was closed. Following local pressure, the station reopened in 1983, but now serves only the London Waterloo to Exeter St. Davids West of England Main Line. Visitors can stay at Toomer Farm, a historic 400 year old stone built house with beautiful walled gardens and orchard. The farm offers carp fishing on one of two small attractive ponds with barbecue facilities provided.
