Watchet is a coastal town situated on the Bristol Channel Coast in Somerset. It lies with the small hamlet of Doniford to the east and the resort of Minehead to the west. The town has a small harbour and its maritime history stretches back over two thousand years. Watchet is proud of the beautiful Watchet Esplanade, which is perfect for strolls andenjoying the sea air. The Market House Museum and the Watchet Boat Museum to just two of a number of museums in the town where you can explore the areas rich history. Apart from the maritime history, the area has a more tragic side to its past. Two local knights were amongst the four responsible for the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral in 1170. As one of the many penances paid for this deed, the knights and there families built and donated St Decuman's church, in the parish church of Watchet. The railway also forms part of the town's history, Watchet being the terminus of the West Somerset Railway. It was closed in 1971 but has since been reopened and is now open to visitors and running restored steam trains. For something completely different, you might like to visit the Tropiquaria at Watchet, where you can enjoy a 'hands on' experience with a Tarantula or Boa Constrictor!
