The village of Winscombe lies the western edge of the Mendip Hills. Archeological finds, including a Palaeolithic hand axe (c.200,000 B.C.), suggest that man has inhabited this area for a very long time. An iron age fort dominates the nearby hill at Banwell and plenty of evidence of Roman occupation confirm that the area retained strategic and economic importance for many ages. A branch line of the Great Western Railway was opened in 1869. Known as the Strawberry Line, it was used by strawberry growers in the Cheddar area to transport their produce to market. The disused track is maintained as a public footpath and cycle track. If you have the time and the energy you can walk, or cycle, from the old station at Winscombe North to Yatton. Or travel in the opposite direction, through the old railway tunnel at Shute Shelve Hill and on to Axbridge and Cheddar. The parish church of St James the Great sits high on a hill and enjoys commanding views across the beautiful Somerset hills, including a vista of the hill fort at Banwell. The villagers still hold an annual Michaelmas fair where they can present their handiwork and local produce.
