Wookey is a small Somerset village situated a few miles to the west of the cathedral City of Wells. It lies on the River Axe surrounded by beautiful countryside in the Mendip Hills. The village is most famous for the nearby Wookey Hole Caves. Thousands of visitors flock to Wookey every year to view the subterranean caverns and the 'secret' underground river. They also come to enjoy the various other attractions now on offer at the site which include a papermill where superb quality hand made Wookey Mill paper is made. There's also a museum to help you learn about the caves and the 50,000 years of man's activities in and around them. Those who prefer life above ground should visit the enchanted Fairy Gardens where you can see the River Axe as it bursts forth from the dark underground caverns on its journey to the sea. Bishop Jocelin of Wells built a manor house in the 13th century, rebuilt in the 16th Century and is now a Grade II listed building. St Matthew's church dates from the 12th century, beside the church stands the 19th century Mellifont Abbey, which is named after the abbey of the same name in Ireland.
