Events in St Clement | 10 Places to Stay
St Clement is a parish in the south east of the island of Jersey. It contains some of the suburbs of St Helier and also the magnificent St Clements Bay. Whilst it is the smallest of Jersey's parishes in terms of area, it is the densest in terms of population.
The boundaries of St Clement stretch from Le Dicq in the west to about a quarter of a mile from the harbour at La Rocque.
Historically, the parish has always battled against the sea. Prior to the building of Le Dicq, the area was frequently subjected to flooding. There is evidence of a forest submerged under the sands at Grève d'Azette.
The area was known as Petravilla or Pierreville prior to Norman times. Records show that a chapel existed in the parish as far back as 1172. There were stories in the 16th and 17th centuries that the parish was the centre of a witch movement. The rock at Rocque Berg (known as the Witches' Rock) was Jersey's focus for witchcraft ceremonies and witches would assemble there for the Friday night Witches' Sabbath.
Victor Hugo, the famous French writer lived in Marina Terrace, St. Clement whilst he wrote his collection of poems entitled 'Les Châtiments'.
