St Helier is one of the largest parishes in Jersey and also the largest town in the Channel Islands. It is believed that it was originally settled at some time around the Roman invasion of Gaul. Helier is the patron saint who was martyred in Jersey and after whom the parish and town are named. The medieval hagiographies depicting Helier show a small fishing village on the dunes. There was an Abbey founded at St. Helier in 1155 on L'Islet, a tidal island adjacent to the Hermitage. Later on this was fortified and turned into Elizabeth Castle, named after Queen Elizabeth I by the governor of the island, Sir Walter Raleigh. St Helier's coastline stretches from Le Dicq in the east to Millbrook in the west. It is a place where you can discover Jersey's rich maritime heritage, a story of remarkable courage. There is a wide choice of accommodation in St Helier including the Pomme D'or Hotel, the Apollo Hotel, the Marina Hotel, the Club Hotel and Spa and the Radisson SAS Waterfront Hotel. A main focal point of the town is Liberation Square where, in 1995, a statue was erected to celebrate 50 years of peace and liberation from the Nazis.
