The parish of St Lawrence occupies a central section of the island and is mostly inland, apart from a short stretch of St Aubin's Bay on its southern part. Hamptonne, the Country Life Museum, can be found in the Parish of St Lawrence. Visitors can see how traditional cider making methods are used in making Jersey Cider. The Cider Press House is the focus of the annual Cider Making Festival, which focuses on the traditional methods. Another museum popular with visitors is The Jersey War Tunnels, previously known as the German Underground Hospital. This was built using POW's as slave labour, forcing them to work under terrible conditions, many dying of disease and starvation, or even being worked to sheer exhaustion. The museum today helps tell the story of the German occupation of the Channel Islands. As well as the museums there is the beach at St Aubin's Bay to visit. Overlooking this is also Elizabeth Castle, a fortified former Abbey. It was named after Queen Elizabeth I by Sir Walter Raleigh, who was Governor at the time. Whilst in St Lawrence, you can stay at the Hotel Cristina, which offers a swimming pool and some of the finest views in Jersey.
