St Peter Port is the capital of Guernsey. It houses the Royal Court House, now the seat of the Bailiwick of Guernsey's government and has been an important and busy port since Roman times. St Peter Port is a deep and safe harbour and is relatively remote from France. This made St Peter Port the Channel Islands' premier port, graced by the wealth of ship builders, privateers and merchant adventurers. Architecturally St Peter Port features a mix of Georgian and Regency styles which have been enriched by the presence of French émigrés, including Victor Hugo, whose influences include Parisian-style urinoirs. You can visit Hauteville, which was Victor Hugo's house of exile. Other historic buildings include St Peter's church at the centre of the town and Castle Cornet, the fortress guarding the entrance to the harbour. The castle was set on a tidal island but this is now joined by a breakwater to the enlarged harbour. If you are looking for somewhere to stay in St Peter Port there is plenty of accommodation to choose from, including the Duke of Richmond Hotel and the Duke of Normandy Hotel. You can reach St Peter Port by ferry or fly into Guernsey Airport.
