Marley Hill is located five miles south west of Newcastle upon Tyne, in the north east of England, close to Gateshead. The north east was the main coal producing area of England in the eighteenth century and as the demand for coal increased the collieries had to be sunk further away from the river and wagonways built to carry the coal to the slaithes on the river for shipment. Due to the cost of such expansion, several landowner families often formed partnerships and this area, the Bowes, Wortley, Ord and Liddell families became known as the Great Allies. They went on to dominate the coal trade for ninety-nine years with collieries throughout Durham and Northumberland. The Tanfield Railway, formerly the Tanfield wagonway, opened in 1725 and was the world’s oldest railway, constructed to take coal from the Stanley and Marley Hill collieries to the river Tyne. Although the line closed in 1962, enthusiastic volunteers and a private company keep the railway open and running. The Marley Hill engine shed is also the oldest working engine shed in England. Dawsons Bridge located nearby, which still stands today is the oldest railway bridge in the world. The Marley Hill Colliery closed in the 1980s, marking the end of the mining in County Durham with only the deepest pits of the east coast remaining.
