Wem is located in North Shropshire and local archaeological finds indicate that this area was originally an Iron Age settlement, with the coming of the Saxons the town acquired the name of “Wamm” meaning marsh and is a direct reference to the marshy ground found around the River Roden which flows through the centre of the town and which, through time, has been modified to Wem. Mentioned in the Domesday Book as consisting of four manors and farms, at that time, it seems that the area was heavily wooded and local wildlife included roebuck and hawks which were in abundance in the area and today Wem is still surrounded by the Shropshire countryside, less wooded but still very much a rural setting. Around 1200 King John granted a charter to Wem confirming its status as a market town, the market is still held today on a Thursday in the Town Hall. Today Wem is a growing town, the High Street offers many local traditional shops and businesses occupying the many Georgian buildings, with excellent communications, good rail links and with a regional airport about an hour away it is a great location for those who need to commute and yet appreciate the rural surroundings that Wem has to offer.
