More than likely Netherton was first established around 1624 and it was in those times mainly an agricultural settlement. Netherton is to be found North East of Liverpool in the North West of England. In 1872 there were just 45 houses and a population of 286 - at the last census the population count was 9,500 and the number of households had grown to just under 3,800. Nearby Newton le Willows was the location for the Vulcan Foundry which from 1883 until the 1970’s built locomotives, originally steam, then electric and diesel, however in 1955 this company was absorbed by the English Electric Company with their works at Netherton and that was subsequently taken over and renamed GEC (in 1968) and who in turn were renamed Marconi. Aintree racecourse is of course just a few minutes away where the world famous annual event of the Grand National is held and has been since 1839 when the first race was won by a horse called Lottery. Netherton is a convenient location for the centre of Liverpool and because it lies North of the City Centre it offers easy access to the M57 and M58, sometimes associated with Bootle it is a suburb of Liverpool in its own right.
