New Brighton – the holiday resort that is to be found at the northernmost part of the Wirral Peninsula in the North West of England and it used to be known as the Blackpool of Liverpool. The seaside promenade offers bracing walks along the River Mersey with views of Liverpool and the coastline up to Crosby on a clear day. The lighthouse at New Brighton is reputed to have been there since 1683 – in those days though it was simply a wooden perch erected on the rocks – it was in 1827 that work proper started on the lighthouse as it stands today and yet it still retains its original name – Perch Rock Lighthouse even though today it is no longer functioning as a lighthouse. Another of New Brighton’s famous landmarks is the Fort, built in the early 1800’s from red sandstone for the protection of the Mersey Docks. Today the Fort is open to the public as a museum. At one time New Brighton also had its own Tower to rival that of Blackpool and like Blackpool this Tower was also based on the Eiffel Tower with its own gardens and fairground. At the start of the First World War the public were forbidden from using it and it fell into disrepair only to be completely destroyed by fire in 1969. Today New Brighton is still a seaside resort and there are plans to bring it back to its former glory.
