Guisborough is a market town in North Yorkshire, within the borough of Redcar and Cleveland. The parish includes outlying villages of Upleatham, Dunsdale and Newton under Roseberry as well as Guisborough itself. The town is listed in the Domesday Book as. Gisborough Priory and dates back to the twelfth century. The Priory’s name is spelt differently as that was the original spelling of the town’s name. Saint Nicholas’s church was built from stone taken from the priory. Guisborough Hall is the ancestral home of Lord Guisborough, now a hotel and conference venue. Due to its close proximity to the the ironstone mines of the North Yorkshire Moors, the town was chosen by Sir Joseph Pease, one of Teesside’s leading ironfounders, as the site of his country seat, Hutton Hall, situated at Hutton Lowcross. The house had its on station on the Middlesbrough-Guisborough branch of the North Eastern Railway, closing in 1964. The town became prosperous during the industrial revolution due to that close proximity. The market, held every Thursday and Saturday, originally sold cows and other livestock but has gradually developed and now sells a variety of flowers, vegetables, fruit and even clothes. The museum houses a collection of photographs of Guisborough’s past.
