The modern town of Brighouse in West Yorkshire’s Calderdale district, with a population now approaching 33,000, has its roots in Saxon times or possibly even as far back as the Roman occupation when a tiny hamlet grew up by a crossing point of the river Calder. Over the years ‘Bridge House’ saw a series of bridges built, first in timber then stone, the traffic funnelled through the town bringing commercial opportunity. In the industrial age the Calder provided the power for the burgeoning textile industry and for grain milling. Further development was facilitated by the building of the Calder and Hebble Navigation in 1757, a canal still bringing business of a different kind to the area, tourist boats having replaced cargo barges. A similar evolution is seen today in the town’s mills, once producing textiles for the British Empire, now more likely to be converted into loft-style apartments for those living in Brighouse but commuting to the boom-city of Leeds and even to Manchester across the Pennines. Their journeys are helped by the town’s location just a mile or so from the M62, and with the refurbished railway station offering a greener option. Happily links with the town’s past persist, in particular its long association with the world of the brass band. The Brighouse and Rastrick Brass Band has been going since 1881, and has won competitive and commercial success along the way, taking national prizes and even getting to number two in the charts with their 1977 recording of The Floral Dance.
