As the setting for the long-running BBC series Last of the Summer Wine Holmfirth is already very well known to many, though the beauty and diversity of the area cannot really be understood without a visit. Situated in the Holme valley with the large town of Huddersfield a few miles north and the Peak District National Park close by to the south, Holmfirth has enormous attraction for visitors, even those who have not been enthralled by Compo and his mates over the years. In medieval times the settlement grew up around a crossing of the River Holme, with a corn mill sited nearby for ease of transport. Even before the industrial revolution the area was an important textile centre, and after today most textile business has gone overseas some specialists remain in the district. Interestingly, given the regular filming in the town by the BBC, and at the start of the 19th century the area’s booming film industry (local entrepreneurs the Bamforths were the Sam Goldwyn’s of the day), Holmfirth probably means Holly Wood. Sid’s café and other sites linked to Nora Batty and crew can be visited by aficionados, but there is a lot more to be seen in the country around Holmfirth, with beautiful villages well worth a call, some intriguingly named ones among them: Netherthong, Upperthong, and Totties included. The rolling Pennine countryside provides a great contrast with the stone cottages and narrow snickets to be seen in the town itself, and it is the beautiful hills that for most will provide the longest-lasting memories.
