For most of the year Skipsea, on the East Yorkshire coast roughly halfway between Bridlington to the north and Hornsea to the south, is a quiet village of (according to the 2001 census) some 633 souls. But in the summer the lure of the sea, the pleasant surrounding countryside, and maybe the produce from the many local farms all attract five times that number of visitors, the majority of them staying in the holiday parks like Mill Farm Country Park and Skirlington Leisure Park. That Skipsea is a seaside resort is something of a historical irony, given that the name means ships’ mooring by a lake or inlet, the lake and the land around it long since swallowed by the North Sea leaving the village on the coast. Though there has been plenty of archaeological evidence of Bronze Age and even Stone Age occupation of the district, the first records of the village date from Norman times, when the local manor was given to a Flemish knight, Drugo de Bruerer, who was also given the hand of William the Conqueror’s niece. Drugo built Skipsea Castle, of which only the impressive earthwork motte remains, but had not long to enjoy it, as he poisoned his wife and went into exile to avoid her uncle’s wrath. The lady’s ghost is said by some still to haunt the area. All Saints’ Church dominates the skyline of the village, an ancient building in the perpendicular style, but the cottages old and new are rather more homely, many of them using local cobbles in their structure and decoration, with lots of whitewashed and red brick walls around too. The sands at Skipsea are extensive, and with a pub for times when the wind gets up a bit too much, this is an enjoyable place for an old fashioned seaside stay
