The substantial East Riding village of Wilberfoss lies just eight miles to the east of the great city of York with all its attractions and history, on the A1079 route between York and Hull. With a population of 1,855 at the 2001 census Wilberfoss is a sizeable place, and has the facilities that might be expected of such a settlement. There are pubs – the Steer Inn and The Oddfellows Arms, and a lovely old church, St John the Baptist’s that stands squat and solid in its neat and tidy churchyard. Around the village there are many attractions to draw visitors. The Stamford Bridge battlefield, scene of one of the three great clashes of 1066, is two miles to the north, and the Yorkshire Museum of Farming and the Yorkshire Air Museum are four miles to the west. Wilberfoss was owned by the family of the same name that produced the great anti-slavery campaigner William Wilberforce, though their tenure that began in Norman times ended before he was born. The town lies in the Yorkshire Wolds, one of the lesser known areas of the county, with a feel perhaps more reminiscent of East Anglia than the conventional view of Yorkshire. For those with the energy a good way to discover that area is by walking the Wolds Way that passes a few miles to the east of Wilberfoss.
