Restaurants with Rooms in Britain

For the foodie there is something heartening about the rise of the restaurant with rooms. Not that the phenomenon is new – look through our list and some of the places are positively local institutions established a generation ago – but that it seems now to be approaching a certain critical mass where you can reasonably hope that almost anywhere you choose to travel in the UK will have such a hostelry within easy reach. Not that you necessarily need to travel or stay there to enjoy their fayre.
Defining the restaurant with rooms is no easy matter, but suffice it to say that when booking you are probably thinking more about dinner than bed – you may not of course be staying; and that they are led by people who live to create great food for their guests, the cook at the very heart of the business – indeed the cook more often than not is the owner or co-owner of the business. Some would say this is the contemporary version of the coaching inn of Dickensian days, where food was more important than drink or a room for the night, and where that food would inevitably have been based on local produce, as is generally the case with these restaurants with rooms.
