Spent early childhood in India. Read classics at St Andrews University. Jailed for refusing war service except in independent Scottish army. Elected Chairman of Scottish National Party in 1942. Became Labour parliamentary candidate after war. Wrote three collections of verse and translated plays of Aristophanes.
