Born 1910 - Austria. Died 1980 - British naturalist and writer.


Living in Kenya with her third husband, game warden George Adamson, she studied and painted wildlife, and made her name with a series of books detailing her experiences saving the life of a lioness, Elsa. Born Free (1960) was later turned into a film starring Virginia McKenna (1966), and subsequent books were Elsa (1961), Forever Free (1962) and Elsa and Her Cubs (1965). She was killed in her home by tribesmen.
