He entered into a long association with John Fowler in 1861, designing the London Metropolitan railway, Victoria station, and many bridges. Their greatest achievement was the Forth Rail Bridge (1883-90). He was also a consultant engineer for the Aswan Dam in Egypt, and the Hudson River Tunnel in New York.
