After national service in the RAF he studied at RADA. His London stage debut was in The Mulberry Bush (1956), followed by Look Back in Anger (1956), Long Day’s Journey into Night (1958) and The Caretaker (1960). He was in many hit films of the decade such as A Kind of Loving (1962), Gregory Girl (1966), Far From The Madding Crowd (1967) and Women in Love (1969). Television appearances include An Englishman Abroad (1982, BAFTA award). He was awarded the CBE in 1995.
