A botanist and geneticist, he was the first professor of agricultural botany at Cambridge in 1908. In 1912 the Plant Breeding Institute (PBI) was established, of which he was Director, and he is regarded as one of the first scientific plant breeders. He won the Royal Society’s Darwin Medal in 1920.
