Educated at Clare College, Cambridge. Held many posts including Professor of Genetics at Stanford and at University of Oxford. Director of Research at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in 1979. Knighted in 1986. Has published extensively on cell genetics, cancer genetics and human population genetics.
