Studied at Trinity College, Cambridge. Became British citizen in 1947. Served as director-general of European Space Research Organisation, chief scientific adviser to Ministry of Defence, chairman of National Environmental Research Council. Best known book Cosmology published in 1952. Knighted in 1973.
