Became presenter and editor of arts series The South Bank Show in 1978. Presented BBC Radio 4’s Start the Week from 1988 to 1998. Co-wrote films Isadora and Jesus Christ Superstar and stage musical The Hired Man. Novels include A Time to Dance (1990), Credo (1996) and The Soldier’s Return (1999). Made a peer in 1998.
