Studied theology at St Andrews University. Called to English Bar in 1806. Was Whig MP from 1830 to 1849. Knighted in 1832, created a Baron in 1841. Appointed Lord Chancellor of Ireland (1841), Chief Justice of the Queen’s Bench (1850) and Lord Chancellor (1859).
