In 1808 constructed and flew a glider. Made thousands of model tests, in 1853 constructed the first successful manned glider. Interested in railway engineering and land reclamation methods. Invented artificial limbs, the caterpillar tractor and tension wheel. Helped found Regent Street Polytechnic in London (1839). Knighted
