Expert on modern art. Went temporarily blind, going to Africa to recuperate. Began writing books combining fiction, anthropology, philosophy and travel which included In Patagonia (1977), The Viceroy of Ouidah (1980), On the Black Hill (1982) and Utz (1988), shortlisted for Booker Prize.
