Born 1814. Died 1883 - English clergyman.

Studied at St John’s College, Cambridge. Became Bishop of Natal in 1853. Learned the Zulu language, translated the Prayer Book and parts of the Bible. Wrote The Pentateuch and the Book of Joshua Critically Examined (1862-79); regarded as heretical. This publication and his unpopularity due to supporting dispossessed Africans led to him being deposed in 1869.
