Participated in piratical adventures in Central America, Philippines, China and Australia. The first Englishman to set foot on Australia. Returned to England in 1691 and published A New Voyage Round the World (1697). Gave name to Dampier Archipelago and Strait. Cruelty to his lieutenant led to his court martial.
