Born 1912 - Jullundur, India. Died 1990 - English novelist, poet, travel writer and playwright.


Educated at St Edmund’s School, Canterbury. Travelled widely as journalist and in service of Foreign Office. Became well known with the Alexandria Quartet, a complex series set in Egypt and The Avignon Quincunx. Wrote travel books, verse, comic sketches, plays and a children’s novel.
