Born 1908. Died 1999 - English explorer and scientist.

Educated at St John’s College, Cambridge. Served in West Africa and Germany during WWII. Led Commonwealth expedition to make an overland crossing of Antarctica. Set out in November 1957 reaching the South Pole in January 1958 and Scott Base in March 1958. Awarded gold medal of Royal Geographical Society (1951) and its Polar medal (1953).
