Ryan Giggs

Born in Ely, Cardiff as Ryan Joseph Wilson, Giggs holds the unique distinction of being British football's most decorated player of all-time. He has played his entire professional career for Manchester United, who signed him into their youth squad at 14. It could have been very different, however, as he was originally spotted while aged 13 by Manchester City. Sir Alex Ferguson personally visited the young Giggs at his home in order to convince him to sign for Manchester United, offering him a youth place leading to a professional contract in three years.
Clearly Ferguson knew talent when he saw it but even he could scarcely have imagined that the young Giggs would turn out so well. Few players stay with one club throughout their professional career in the modern game but Giggs has bucked that trend. Giggs has been a significant part of Manchester United's ongoing success throughout his long and loyal time at the club.
Giggs first turned out for the first team in 1990-91 and has been a regular since 1991-92. This makes him Manchester United's longest serving player. In 2007-08 he was still turning out regularly, captaining the side when Gary Neville was injured.
Ryan Giggs has won more major honours than any other player in the history of English Football, with 20 major titles including 10 Premier League titles, four FA Cups and two UEFA Champion's League titles. He has played in and scored in every season of the Premier League since its launch.
Ryan Giggs retired from international football in 2007 after being a hero of the Welsh national side since his first appearance in 1991 at the age of just 17. He had captained England Schoolboys prior to playing for Wales as an adult. How often must England fans have wished he had gone on to play for the England senior side?
