(full name and title: Amir Khan)
Born: December 8, 1986
Amir Khan is a professional British boxer who currently fights in the Lightweight division. He was born in Bolton in 1986 and is an avid supporter of his hometown football club, Bolton Wanderers. Khan uses the facilities at the Bolton Wanderers home ground, the Reebok Stadium, for his own training.
Khan is very proud of his Bolton roots but he is equally proud of his ancient family heritage from Rawalpindi in Pakistan. He is a descendant of the Janjua Rajput clan, a long line of warrior kings. He is first cousin to England cricketer Sajid Mahmood and he has a younger brother who also boxes.
Starting his amateur boxing career at 11, Khan went on to win Gold at the Junior Olympics in 2003. A year later, still only 17, he found himself in the 2004 Olympic Games at Athens. The young Khan had the boxing hopes of a nation resting on his shoulders, being Britain's only representative in boxing at the Games. Khan showed no signs of wilting under the pressure, however, storming through his first four fights to set up a showdown in the final with the Cuban, Mario Kindelan. The Cuban was a very experienced boxer, he was twice the age of Khan. Kindelan's experience eventually prevailed in a high scoring final bout. The Cuban took the gold 30-23 and Khan went home with a highly creditable silver medal. The young Englishman got his revenge a year later, beating Kindelan in Khan's last fight before turning professional.
After going professional, Khan took 18 wins in a carefully constructed path towards a world title fight. He won the Commonwealth Lightweight title and is a top ten ranked contender in all the major boxing board rankings for the various world titles on offer at his weight.
Khan has been impressive in most of his fights but showed some defensive flaws in a bout against Michael Gomez, who floored him in the second round. Although Khan responded impressively but this incident caused some boxing experts, such as the legendary Barry McGuigan, to suggest that he needs a couple more fights before challenging for the world title.
