Began playing professional cricket at the age of 18. Plays county cricket for Yorkshire. Played first test match for England against South Africa in 1999. Scored his first Test Century against Pakistan in 2001. appointed Test captain in 2003. Led England to Ashes victory against Australia in 2005.
