Leader of the militant shop-steward’s movement during WW1. Arrested and deported in 1916. Helped to found the Communist Party of Great Britain. Elected MP for Fife West in 1935 and stood until 1951, making the longest serving Communist MP in Britain. Wrote several books including (1949), his autobiography, The Chosen Few (1940) and The Tyrant's Might is Passing (1954).
