Studied medicine at Birmingham Hospital and King’s College London. Published Meteorographica (1863), his investigations into meteorology were the basis for modern weather maps. Supported the evolutionary theories of Charles Darwin. Founded the study of eugenics. Researched colour blindness and mental imagery. Elected FRS in 1856 and knighted in 1909.
