Won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, London. Studied in Salzburg and Siena. Associate Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (1952-54). Became youngest musical director of Sadler’s Wells in 1957. Became principal conductor and artistic director of Scottish National Orchestra in 1959, retired in 1984.
