Born 1857. Died 1903 - English novelist.

His first novel Workers in the Dawn (1880) was a failure though his second novel The Unclassed (1884) achieved moderate success. Produced his best works between 1891 to 97 including New Grub Street, Born in Exile, The Odd Women, In the Year of Jubilee, and The Whirlpool. Published The Private Papers of Henry Ryecroft in 1901, his most biographical work which achieved instant successf. Died aged 46 from the effects of emphysema.
