Associated with George and Robert Stephenson in railway construction. Recruited by Brunel at the age of 21 for the Great Western Railway. Made a name for himself in submarine telegraphy by laying the first Atlantic cable (1865-66). Was created a Baronet in 1866 in recognition of his cable work.
