Established successful printing business before entering House of Commons in 1966. Joined Margaret Thatcher’s Cabinet in 1979 as Secretary of State. Resigned in 1986 over The Westland Affair. Returned to John Major’s Cabinet in 1990, presided over the reform of the poll tax. Declined to run for leadership for health reasons.
