Educated at Balliol College, Oxford. Became an MP in 1950 for Orkney and Shetland. Was leader of the Liberal Party from 1956 to 1967 and briefly in 1976 when Jeremy Thorpe resigned. Retired from Parliament in 1983 and was made a life peer that same year.
