Descendant of Charles Montagu, first Earl of Halifax. Educated at Christ Church, Oxford. Was MP for Ripon from 1910 to 1925. Was Foreign Secretary (1938-40) under Neville Chamberlain. Viceroy of India (1926-31) and Ambassador to the USA (1941-46). Created an earl in 1944.
