Born 1923 - Scottish aeronautical engineer.
Studied civil engineering at Edinburgh University. Worked on airborne anti-submarine weapons. Researched into the design of seaplanes and flying boats. Joined the Royal Aircraft Establishment in 1951 and worked on supersonic flight. Was first director of the Concorde project, involved in the first flights to the two prototypes. Became Permanent Under-Secretary of State at Department of Education and Science. Retired from Civil Service in 1983.
