Educated at Newnham College, Cambridge. First woman to study archaeology and anthropology to degree level. Published a number of books on these subjects as well as a biography, poetry and fictional works. Married her second husband, J B Priestley, in 1953. Was a co-founder of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in 1957.
